With greater investment in substation automation, protection becomes critical. Co-ops that lease lines from a local telephone company need, in all cases, to isolate electrical equipment, indicates Bert Habert, vice president of sales for Positron Power.

“If you have a substation where the ground potential rise is more than 1,000 volts, you absolutely need to separate the substation ground from the telephone circuit ground,” he cautions.
